James Lee Askew

1926-2014

James Lee Askew, 87, of Muskogee, died on Sunday, May 11, 2014, in Weatherford, Texas.  He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on November 28, 1926 to Clyde and Fern Askew.  A seven, year gap between Jim and his two older brothers, Clyde and Bob, was likely the reason he developed such a strong independence at a young age.

Having completed High School by the age of 17, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 16, 1944.  Following his service, he graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Business.  While they were students at OU, Jim married the love of his life, Patricia Nolte, also from Muskogee.  They were married for almost 50 years until her passing in 1996.

After living in Norman and Oklahoma City, they settled back in Muskogee where they would raise their children.  Jim was a successful businessman who was always active in his community.  There was nothing that he would not do for his children, including braving the mob at a Junior High dance dressed as Santa Claus and ending up pinned against the wall as he tossed candy to over zealous crowd.  He put his time in driving car pool for years, volunteered in sports programs and attended anything in which his children ever participated.  Starting his own real estate and insurance business early on, The Jim Askew Agency was established and launched his successful real estate appraising career until his retirement in 2008.

Jim and Patsy were blessed with three children; Catherine L. Thomas of Houston, TX, James C. Askew (Sarah) of Lenexa, KS and Julie A. Adams (Don) of Aledo, TX.  Over the years they enjoyed spending time, including memorable family vacations, with their nine grandchildren; Sarah Thomas Karle (David) of Lincoln, NE, R. Andrew Thomas of Houston, TX, Baird Askew of Overland Park, KS, Bennett Askew (Alyssa) of Layton, UT, Claire Askew, of Portland, OR, Jennifer Adams Woodard (Mason) of Shreveport, LA, J. Blake Adams (Courtney) of Mandeville, LA, J. Coleman Adams of Denver, CO and M. Turner Adams of Covington, LA.  Continued blessings brought Jim four great-grandchildren: Jake M. Woodard, Bowen G. Woodard, Aden L. Adams and Caroline E. Karle.

Jim loved animals and never seemed to be without a dog in his arms.  His rescue Jack Russell, Buddy, was more than a dog to him - Buddy was a best friend.  The two became just what the other one needed, and they were grateful to share their days together right up to the end.

A private burial will include honorary pallbearers:  James C. Askew and his sons Baird and Bennett, R. Andrew Thomas, Donald A Adams, Jr. and his sons, Blake, Cole and Turner and close family friend, Charles Mason.

A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 15th at 11;00 in the Rowsey Chapel at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Muskogee.  In memory of a life well lived, please consider St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.  The Tulsa SPCA or a charitable organization of your choosing.

Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster- Petering Funeral Home.  Condolences to the family may be made at www.foster-petering.com
