Albert “Eldon” Hill

1921 - 2014

Albert “Eldon” Hill, 92, of Muskogee, Oklahoma died on June 11, 2014 in his home. Eldon was born on Sept. 11, 1921 in Lockney, Texas to Thomas Barlow and Elizabeth Pearl Hill. After graduation, he achieved a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in agriculture. He later sold insurance with Aetna Life.

Eldon entered the United States Air Force on August 6, 1944, serving in WWII as a bombardier-navigator on board B-26 and A-26 medium bombers. He completed 79 combat missions, 45 as the lead bombardier. Edward R. Murrow joined Eldon on a mission and commended Captain Hill’s skill and courage during his national radio broadcast on Aug. 13, 1944. On D-Day, Eldon was lead bombardier of an 18-plane formation, the last group to bomb behind Utah Beach just before the first assault troops hit. After his discharge he remained in the Reserves and retired on Sept. 11, 1981 with the rank of Colonel.

He married Benny Gene Long on October 21, 1944, and she has been at his side all through the years.

Albert was a member of the 386 Bomb Group, a former member of the USAER group and a member of the Wedding Ring Group. His hobbies included crossword puzzles, solitaire, fishing, and working on a diary of his military service that he distributed to family, friends and local libraries. His honors were numerous. With his diary and extensive knowledge of WWII, he could entertain you for hours.

On May 26, 2005 the Oklahoma State Senate honored Eldon with Resolution 50, authored by Senator Earl Garrison, honoring his war record. In September 2007 the highway from Okmulgee to Shawnee Avenues in Muskogee was designated Colonel Albert Hill Highway.

Eldon was preceded in death by his son, David Hill of Dallas, Texas; parents, Barlow and Pearl Hill; and brothers Lawrence, Jim and Barlow Jr.

Eldon is survived by his loving family: wife, (Benny) Gene Hill of Muskogee; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and David Hoffman of Muskogee; daughter-in-law Karen Hill of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Emily (Joe) Hedges, Kelly (Staci) Hoffman, Joey (Sarah) Hoffman; great-grandchildren, Kelci, Makenna, Scout, Emma, Jack, Davie, Gabriel, Jarrett and Evelyn; and sister-in-law, Norma Hill.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014 at St. Paul United Methodist Church.  Interment will follow in Fort Gibson National Cemetery.

Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.  Condolences to the family may be made at www.foster-petering.com.
