Robert “Moose” Hurst

1935-2012

—  Robert E. Lee “Bobby” “Moose” Hurst, longtime Checotah resident died Monday October 22, 2012 in Eufaula.  

He was born on February 1, 1935 in Texanna, Oklahoma to Robert E. Lee and Anna (Brinsfield) Hurst. Bobby grew up in Texanna and Checotah area and when he finished school he was drafted into the US Army. While in the service, Bobby was on the radio for winning the “Best Dressed” soldier. Upon his honorable discharge he was in California where he met and married Helen Faye Bonds. While in California he began his family and owned and operated a Welding Shop, inventing and building several implements that are still in use to this day. Later he moved his family back to the Checotah area where he owned and operated his own trucking service until his retirement. Bobby loved drag racing and was always proud of his “RoadRunners” winning several races and earning many trophies.

 Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Gladys Hurst and Imogene Whisenhunt; brothers, Ben Hurst and Richard Hurst. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Checotah; daughter, Sandra and husband Tommy Mitchell of Checotah, son, Robert L. Hurst of Checotah, daughter, Valorie Heroneme of Hitchita, daughter Cindy Campbell of Godley, TX and daughter Shelly and husband Ronnie Hill of Tecumseh; sisters, Margaret and husband, Lonnie Robison and Carol and husband Steve Williams; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday October 24, 2012 at Greenlawn Cemetery with Reverend Tim Whisenhunt officiating.  Pallbearers will be Tommy Mitchell, Ronnie Hill, Mitch Davis, Johnny Snelson, Dustin Dye and Jimmy Don Hurst. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Hart, Lonnie Robison, Harold Hurst, Jerry Grant, Ernest Hughes, Claude “Goob” Whisenhunt and Steve Williams.
