Elizabeth Caroline “Betty” Gibson


— Elizabeth Caroline “Betty” Gibson, 87, of Muskogee, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on September 9, 1925 in Muskogee to Harry and Elizabeth (Metz) Gibson.

Betty was raised in Muskogee and graduated from Central High School and later attended Sweetbriar College in Lynchburg, VA and Gulf Park Junior College in Gulfport, MS. Betty was a lifelong friend and employee of Congressman Ed Edmondson retiring from Capital Hill. She was a staunch and active member of the Democratic Party having recently worked on Rob Wallace’s campaign. She was a world traveler and actively participated and supported numerous charities including the National Cathedral, Five Civilized Tribe, Keystone Study Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Betty is survived by her sister, Barbara Gibson Newell of Muskogee; nephews, Dan Newell, Gib Newell, and Greg Newell, Jr.; Great nephews and nieces, Brad Newell, Grant Newell, Jake Newell, Karlie Newell, Klaire Newell, and Katy Newell; nieces-in-laws, Kristy, Laura and Teresa and numerous cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Gregory H. Newell, Sr.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Betty Gibson will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2013 at Grace Episcopal Church. The burial will be held prior to the memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Greenhill Cemetery.

The family suggest memorial gifts be made to: Grace Episcopal Church Building Fund, 218 N. 6th Street, Muskogee OK 74401 or the National Cathedral of Washington DC, 3101 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington DC  20016.
