Yual Lewis “Larry” Harmon, 90 year old Checotah resident, passed away peacufully on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Tulsa. He was born on Thursday, November 8, 1923 to Mirt and Stella (Morton) Harmon in Olcott, West Virginia. Larry was raised in Olcott, West Virginia where he attended school. He would walk to Charleston, West Virginia where he worked at a local movie theater and later worked as a gas station attendant. Larry entered the United States Army on Tuesday, January 19, 1943 in Huntington, West Virginia. He met the love of his life Emily Chaffin in Marysville, CA and they were united in marriage on Thursday, May 4, 1944 in Olivehust, CA. Larry served in the battle of the Rhineland in Central Europe during World War II and received his Good Conduct WWII Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on Wednesday, April 10, 1946. Then he began working as a crane operator in California where he was known as the best. Larry retired in 1982 and moved to Checotah in 1986 where he was a member of the Texanna Assembly of God Church. He was a gun collector, sharp minded man who was always thinking, enjoyed spending time at the Checotah Senior Citizen Center and had great love for his family. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; the love of his life wife Emily on Thursday, September 19, 2013. He is lovingly survived by his daughters, Juanita Riechers, Deborah Park and her husband James; grandchildren, James Riechers, Angela Riechers, Amber Freeman and husband Shane, Levi Wiles and his wife Naomi; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Alexander Wiles. Larry is also survived by his nephews, Kessell Harmon and his wife Norma and Darrel Harmon; three nieces, Vera Miller, Velma Cabello, and Patsy Harmon; cousin Lorraine George, other extended family and a lifetime of friends. Viewing will be from 12-7 P.M. on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Garrett Family Funeral Home. Service celebrating the life of Larry will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Texanna Assembly of God Church with Reverend Tim Allen officiating. Committal prayers, Military Honors provided by the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard and Interment will follow in Fort Gibson National Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Levi Wiles and Michael Eslick will serve as Casket Bearers.
