Sherrell Helen McHenry

Sherrell graced this world with her presence on September 16, 1994 to Sherry McHenry-Leland and LaMon Harbert.

At the tender age of four, God sent Sherrell her very own servant in the form of her dad, Curtis Leland.  He was instrumental in strengthening her relationship with the Lord.  Affectionately referred to as “Rel” by family and friends, she accepted Christ at an impressionable age and began praise dancing at the age of five.

“Rel” began playing various sports about this same time, including gymnastics, softball, basketball and soccer.  Ultimately, she fell in love with basketball, but kept her praise dancing ministry in focus.

There’s an African proverb that teaches “it takes a village to raise a child,” with her understanding, her grandmother, Shirley McHenry was an exceptional part in the raising of Sherrell, along with her Uncle Otis “DaDa”, who had a great impact on her life and “basketball.”  Sherrell began to excel in basketball during her middle school years.  She played on the varsity from her freshman through her senior years.

Her awards included Haskell’s offensive and defensive player of the year, as well as MVP, All-Star Player 2013, All-Around Player in the Shrine Tournament, Outstanding Achiever 2010, Muskogee Phoenix All-Star 2013.  “Rels” athletic ability awarded her a scholarship to play for Connors State College.  She adored being a “Cowgirl” for Connors.  Her life exemplified the best in mentorship and God’s divine love.  The impact includes uplifting those heavy with burdens, counseling those who needed understanding and enhancing life to all.

Sherrell Helen McHenry, in her 19th year with us, “Finished Early” on Friday, May 2, 2014 from Warner, Oklahoma.  She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Armstead McHenry, Mr. C. W. Leland and Mr. Eli Harbert, her grandmother, Myrtle Harbert and her namesake, her great-grandmother, Helen Rivers.

She leaves in God’s care to cherish her memory;  her parents, Curtis and Sherry Leland, Wagoner, Oklahoma and LaMon Harbert, Tulsa, Oklahoma;  her grandmothers, Shirley McHenry, Haskell, Oklahoma and Marie Leland, Batesville, Mississippi;  her sister, Ryan McHenry Reed, Tulsa, Oklahoma; her brother, Otis “Lil-O” McHenry, Haskell, Oklahoma;  a close group of special Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins too numerous to name individually, but all very dear and close to “Rel”; along with other family members, teammates and friends.

The Hour of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. in the Franklin Event Center, Haskell High School Campus.  Dr. Marlon J. Coleman, Presiding and Dr. Zannie Leland, Jr., Eulogist.  Burial will follow in Haskell Cemetery.

You may visit "Rel" as she slumbers in sweet repose at the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., on Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM and share memories at the Wake from 6 PM to 8 PM at the First Baptist Church, 800 M.L.K., in Wagoner.  You may also see her on Saturday from 9:00 until 9:45 prior to the service.
