Amelia “Mel” Margaret Jones

1924-2013


— Amelia “Mel” Margaret Jones, 89, of McAlester, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday  in McAlester.

She was born February 19, 1924 in Melcher, Iowa, she was a daughter to Joseph and Pauline (Kauzlarich) Polich. She graduated from Melcher High School in 1941, and went to Des Moines where she spent three years during World War II working at the Des Moines Ordnance Plant. It was in Des Moines where she met the love of her life, Belvany Gene Jones, on a blind date in February 1944. The two married on August 25, 1945 in Des Moines and moved to New London, Connecticut where her husband would finish his tour of duty in the United States Navy. The couple then moved to Haskell, Oklahoma and lived with his parents until they moved to Muskogee after Gene found work as a laundry truck driver and then as a police officer.

While in Muskogee, Mel was heavily involved in her church and civic affairs, school activities, and summer league baseball. She worked for ten years in the retail business until 1967 when they moved to McAlester due to Gene’s new position with the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation.

While in McAlester, Mel continued to be involved in the many social, civic, and church activities that had always been a major part of her life. She and Gene spent much time with their grandchildren and taking trips around the country. They were members of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived b y a son and daughter-in-law, David and Connie Jones of Crowder, Ok., a grandson, John & Tammy Jones of McAlester, Ok., granddaughter, Kerri and Greg Cecil of Crowder, Ok., a great-grandson, Conner Jones of McAlester, Ok, and great-granddaughters, Abigail  & Erin Cecil both of Crowder, Ok.

Survivors also include a sisters and a brother, Wilma and Jake Hansaker of Melcher, IA,  William and Linda Polich of Rochester, MN, and Arlene Wilson of Melcher, IA., a brother-in-law, Charles and Barbara Jones of Wagoner, Ok., and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Polich in 1930; her mother, Pauline Polich in 1990; stepfather, William Polich in 1966; brother: Rudolph Polich in 1970; and her husband: Belvany Gene Jones in 2009.

The family will receive visitors from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Funeral Home.

Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2013 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Rodney Briggs officiating.

Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.
