Curtis Black

1934 - 2013

— On April 15th, 1934, in Dustin, Oklahoma, a handsome son, Curtis was the first of three children born to Marshall and Cleo Black, After the premature passing of a young Cleo, Curtis along with his sisters, Ethel and Maline were blessed with a wonderful mother when their father was joined in marriage to Alice McDow in 1941. They made their home in Muskogee, OK. Curtis and his two sisters attended Blackjack School through 8th grade, affectionately known as “The Schoolhouse.” Curtis graduated from Moton High School in Taft, OK, with the class of 1957. In 1963 Curtis met and married the love of his life, Sylvia McGee Swift. They were blessed with four children. The family spent a number of years in Kansas City, MO, before returning to make their permanent home in Muskogee.

Curtis dedicated his life to Jehovah and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in January 1974 along with his wife. He remained a faithful, loyal servant actively engaging  in the ministry right up to his death. Curtis retired from Zapata Industries after twenty-six years of dedicated service. Being a family man he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed telling them stories from his childhood and sharing family history. He also enjoyed fishing, travel and most of all the resale and trade business. As many knew, he was a talented carpenter, locksmith and handyman. Curtis never met a stranger. His mild mannered demeanor, caring nature and unmistakable laugh were irresistible and will be remembered always.

Curtis was preceded in death by both of his mothers, Cleo and Alice Black, an infant brother and one brother-in-law, W.D. Ballard and within the last few months his beloved wife, Sylvia, his father, Marshall and uncle, Walker Black. Curtis is survived by his children, Cecil (Mary) Swift, Wagoner, OK, Delphyne (Kevin) Jones, Tony (Stacey) Black, all of Muskogee, OK and Stacy (John) Coker, Los Angeles, CA. His sisters, Maline Hughes and Ethel Ballard, both of Tulsa, OK. Five granddaughters, and nine grandsons. Three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Curtis will be held Friday, July 19th, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at the Muskogee Civic Center (Rooms C & D) with Brother Ron Norwood officiating. He will be laid to rest in Booker T. Washington Cemetery. Hours of visitations will be today from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Services are under the direction of Ragsdale Funeral Center.
