Tony Gene Hale (Poppy)

1944 - 2012

— Tony Gene Hale, born January 17th, 1944 to Richard and Irene Hale, passed from this life on Saturday November 24th in Wagoner at the age of 68.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Tony worked hard his entire life on the farm as a young boy and later as a mechanic and laborer who was willing to lend a hand to anyone that needed it. He served on the Porter Police Department working under his good friend Jabo Burke for a brief period of time.

He worked as a mechanic for his friend Pete Damme of Haskell for a number of years. He later became a bus mechanic for the Coweta School District and worked there for six years. From there he worked odd jobs until he followed his passion of becoming a small engine mechanic and his own boss. He would say that being his own boss was great because he could open and close when he wanted and could still make time for fishing. He passed his knowledge of small engine mechanics on to his son, Darryl, who sometimes helped him and later passed his skills to his two oldest grandsons, Darryl Jr. and Antonio. They worked long hours at times, so they could finish early and enjoy some fishing time with their grandpa, relaxing on the pond bank, reeling in the big ones. While working for himself, Tony also worked part time for John Matthews of Porter who owned and operated the Porter Feed Mill. He ended his life’s work while working for Roy Cole of Porter whom he often helped maintain his pecan orchards around Porter.

Tony grew up and lived in and around the Porter area most of his life. He attended school in Porter and also Oktaha and Wainwright. He met the love of his life, Betty Cole in September of 1958. After a five year relationship, they married in Coweta, OK, on September 16th, 1963. From their union they had two children, Darryl Hale Sr. of Porter and Dana Macareno also of Porter. His hobbies included his grandchildren, mechanics and fishing.

Tony is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Irene Hale, one sister, Jane Billings and two brothers Bob and Kenny Hale. He is survived by his wife, Betty of the home, son, Darryl Hale Sr. of Porter, daughter, Dana Macareno and her husband, Roberto of Porter, and god-daughter, Ereka Cole-Hale and her husband Darren of Checotah. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Darryl Hale Jr. and wife, Courtney of Oktaha, Antonio, Kasey and Carlos Macareno of Porter and Dylon Hale also of Porter.
