Minnie Fay Brandon

1938 - 2014

Minnie Fay Brandon, 75 year old Checotah resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 after a courageous battle with multiple illnesses. She was born on Friday, September 23, 1938 in Phoenix, Arizona to Willie and Lelah Kelley Gable. As a young girl she migrated to Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma and California with her family while they worked in the potato fields.

Fay married at an early age, became a homemaker, and a mother to six children while maintaining her home and working as a waitress. In 1977, she became a widow and was the sole provider for her family, working many jobs to make ends meet. She was introduced to JR Brandon by her nephew; they began dating, fell in love and married on Saturday, November 16, 1985 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They returned to Bakersfield, CA before moving to Checotah OK in 1995.

She had a great sense of humor, quick wit, enjoyed working crossword puzzles, cooking, dancing and classic country music. Fay was known by all to have great inner strength, was honest and full of integrity. She had a great love for her family, and they recognized her as a beautiful wife, loving and protective mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Fay loved all the family BBQ’S and get togethers. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sheila Baker; a son, Robin Brandon; a great-grandson, Chandler Willden; two brothers, Benny Gable and Doc Gable; two sisters, Odeana Watson and Dorise Scoggins.

Fay is lovingly survived by her husband, JR of the home; seven children, Melvin McNeal and his wife Noreen, Zelinda Yocum and her husband Erben, Charles McNeal, Dureda Stoddard and her husband Leeland, Allen McNeal, LaVana McNeal and Stephanie Koons and her husband Doug; 24 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Deluris Johns and her husband Russell; three brothers, Lonnie Gable, RL Gable and Bill Gable and his wife Pauline; her cousin and best friend, Barbara Herring, other extended family and a lifetime of friends.

Viewing for Fay will be 9 AM - 7 PM on Monday, June 9, 2014 with her family greeting friends from 5 PM - 7 PM at Garrett Family Funeral Home. Services celebrating the life of Fay will be 1 PM Tuesday, June 10, 2014 in the Serenity Chapel of Garrett Family Funeral Home with Chaplain Tony Hodgson and Reverend Tim Turner ministering. Committal prayers and Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Brian McNeal, Ronnie Ross, Leslie Phillips, Eric Cowan, Chandler Koons and Marvin Harrell will serve as Casket Bearers. Doug Koons and Ralph Hart will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers.
