Nina Dugger died on February 26, 2014 at Forest Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, after a bout of pneumonia. She was ninety-three years old, born in Wagoner, Oklahoma, on July 11, 1920 to Jim and Sallie (Winebrenner) Edwards. In the spring of 1905, her father Jim moved from Ponca City to Wagoner where he bought land and farmed ten miles northeast of Wagoner. On May 19, 1906, Jim went back to Ponca City and married his sweetheart Sallie Ellen Winebrenner, returning to Wagoner to start their family.
Nina graduated from Wagoner High School in 1938, marrying her sweetheart, Elmer Dugger on July 29, 1938. Elmer joined the army and traveled to Japan, fighting on the front line in World War II. While Elmer was gone, Nina lived with her sister Georgia in Muskogee, working for the railroad department for one year. Nina also lived in Lawton, Oklahoma, working in real estate, while Elmer fought in the war.
Nina and Elmer lived together in Japan for several years, where Nina worked on the base as the secretary to the commanding officer. The Duggers returned to the United States to live most of their married life in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Elmer died in 1960 at the age of forty-three. Nina never remarried, stating often that Elmer was her one and only love.
When she felt well in her final days, Nina was full of energy and enthusiasm, entertaining her guests with her graciousness and sense of humor. It was always a joy to visit Nina. She loved telling her life stories including tales of her many friends and family, pets, and travels.
Nina is survived by her son, Donald Clark Dugger and his wife, Nancy, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, grandsons, Donald Dugger and his wife, Meghan, and Joseph Dugger, great-grandchildren, Adeline, Jackson, and Natali, all of Virginia Beach, Virginia, nieces Charlene Edwards Brady of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Judie Jacoby Felentzer of Tampa, Florida, Patti Edwards Butler and husband, Steve, of Wagoner, Alma Dugger Sadler and her husband, Bob, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Beverly Dugger Stockton and husband, Wayne, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, nephews J.W. Edwards of Wagoner, Oklahoma, Sam Dugger and wife, Ginger, of Dallas, Texas, Mike Charles Dugger and wife, Edith, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Dale Dugger and wife, Diane, of Norco, Louisiana, cousin Howard Edwards of Muskogee, Oklahoma, as well as many great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Elmer, Nina was preceded in death by her parents, Jim, in 1947 and Sallie, in 1971. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Charles Leroy Edwards, Georgia Ellen Edwards Courtney, Mable Maureen Edwards Jacoby, and Walter Warren Edwards.
The funeral service for Nina will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014 at Mallett Funeral Home Chapel in Wagoner. The Reverend Wade Robertson will officiate. Pallbearers will be Chris Edwards, John Butler, Jason Butler, Jarrad Edwards, Donald Dugger and Joseph Dugger. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner, OK.
