Alta Marie Peterson

1917 – 2013

Alta Marie Peterson, 95, of Muskogee, died Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Broadway Manor Health Care Center. She was born on November 22, 1917 in Oberlin, Kansas to John C. and Della I. (Whittel) Wert.

Alta graduated from high school at Ottawa, Kansas. She began her career working as a bookkeeper, office clerk and in sales. In 1955, she and George purchased and operated Western Auto. She retired from Coburn Optical after 14 years of service.

Since 1956, Alta had been a member of First United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was a member of New Friends Club and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed square dancing and belonged to the OG&E Ready Rounders and the Muskogee Twirlers. Also, she enjoyed bowling, playing cards and being with friends.

For twenty years, she lived in Rio Grande Valley, Texas during the winters. Alta had a great memory, beautiful hair and was always smiling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George F. Peterson, on January 27, 1989; two nieces, three sisters, one brother and one step-son.

She is survived by her niece, Marilyn Leach and her husband, Don, of Gravois Mills, MO; one great-niece, three great-nephews, four great-great-nieces and five great-great- nephews and husband of a deceased niece, Howard Hamilton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2013 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Kemper officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Friends may wish to remember Alta by making memorials to First United Methodist Church, 600 E. Okmulgee, Muskogee, OK 74403.
