Charles Dean O’Brien

1968 - 2013

— Charles Dean O’Brien, two days short of age 45, died Thursday, October 3, 2013, in Muskogee. An “Okie from Muskogee” for the last 25 years, he was born October 5, 1968, to Virginia Collins Johnson and Charles Dan O’Brien and raised in Amarillo, TX, where he attended River Road High School. As a child, when visiting aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents in the Muskogee area, he and his sister, Belinda, often went to Vacation Bible School at Meadowbrook Baptist Church. Although shy when young, it is said that later he truly “never met a stranger.” He prided himself on helping others, (a trait learned in Boy Scouts training), many times taking it upon himself as an adult to help a stranger or especially an elder person with car trouble, shoveling snow-packed driveways, tilling a vegetable garden, or flower bed.

He loved family, country music, and to ride horses. Dean was a self-employed construction contractor, especially skilled in home remodeling projects. Like his grandfather Orville Collins, he could drive any type of large equipment used in road work or oil field tending.

Sadly, he was predeceased by his father on June 2, 1981; paternal grandfather, C.D. O’Brien of Amarillo; and maternal grandparents, Pauline (Lay) Collins of Oklahoma City and Orville Collins of Borger, TX, and later Muskogee.

Dean is survived by his wife, Jamie (Stephens) O’Brien and stepdaughter, Summer Monson of the home; two children, Connor Adcock and Bailey Adcock of Muskogee; four stepchildren, Brian Daniels of Wagoner, Shelly Walls of Oktaha, Haylee Daniels of Oktaha, and Jaeson McRoy of Wagoner; sister and brother-in-law, Belinda and George Swartwood of Arlington, TX and their four children, Daniel Law, Autumn Law, Avery Law, and Analeece Swartwood; paternal grandmother, Jean O’Brien of Amarillo, TX; mother, Virginia (Collins) Johnson of Amarillo, TX; plus six grandchildren, aunts, cousins, and many friends.

Services will be officiated by Pastor Darrel Simmons at 10:00 A.M., Monday, October 7, 2013 in the Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home Chapel, 2801 Chandler Road, Muskogee, OK, with burial afterward in Middleton Chapel Cemetery in Oktaha. Pallbearers will be Connor Adcock, Ricky Poindexter, Denise Downum, David Johnson, Sean Tiger, and Chris White. Honorary pallbearers are George Carman, Grady Chapman, David Chapman, Tommy O’Brien, Ross Davis, and Gerald “Rascal” Collins.
