Lela Fay (Seward) Gibson


— Lela Fay (Seward) Gibson, age 103, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013, at Lakeview Christian Home, Carlsbad, NM. Fay was born June 7, 1909, in Muskogee, OK, to James Monroe and Mary Susan (Weaver) Seward. She was the 11th of 13 children. All have preceded her in death.

Fay received her elementary education at a one-room country school. In 1926, due to her mother’s health, the family moved to Tucumcari, NM. She graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1928. Her mother passed away in 1929. The family returned to Muskogee in 1930. She entered Northeastern State College at Tahlequah, OK, obtaining a teaching certificate. She taught, attended night classes and received her BS degree in 1942. She married James Arthur Cobb August 23, 1933. He passed away in 1946. In 1948, she moved to Carlsbad, NM, teaching one year at Craft Elementary School. On June 23, 1949, she married Paul Gibson. He passed away November 10, 1975. She was also preceded in death by her stepson and wife, Paul David and Betty Gibson.

She was a member of Fox and Lake Church of Christ, Eastern Star #54, Carlsbad Woman’s Club, Altrusa Club, CRMC Auxiliary, Sr Recreation Center, and several bridge clubs.

Fay is survived by grandson, Paul Grant Gibson, Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Ginnyren and husband Todd Willetts, Richardson, TX; great grandsons, Taylor and Mitchell Willetts, Richardson, TX; nephews, Lewis Seward, Portland, OR, James Cranford, Alpine, WY, Bill Seward, Topeka, KS, Howard Perry, Muskogee, OK, Claybourn Seward, Ft Gibson, OK; nieces, Elizabeth Dysinger, Leavenworth, KS, Nancy A. Skidmore, Cheyenne Wells, CO,  JoAnn Jones, Houston, TX, Janet Whitehead, Tulsa, OK.

A graveside service celebrating the life of Fay (Seward) Gibson will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2013 at Greenhill Cemetery with Bill Crow officiating.

The family has entrusted Bradley Family Funeral and Cremation Service with the arrangements.
