Dorothy Covington Chafin (Bottoms)

1915 - 2013

— Funeral Services for Dorothy Covington Chafin (Bottoms) will be held on Monday , May 13th, 2013 at 1:00 at Reed-Culver Chapel with Chaplin Wendell Cox officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 12th, 2013 from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Reed-Culver Chapel Interment will be held at Tahlequah City Cemetery. Dorothy Covington Chafin(Bottoms) was born on September 9th, 1915 in Sallisaw, OK the daughter of Edward Lee and Dovie Mae (Morris) Covington. She moved to the Tahlequah area when she was 11 years old and attended Sequoyah and Bagley high School in Tahlequah, OK. In 1934, she married William McKinley Chafin, he preceded Dorothy in death in 1974. This union was blessed with two daughters, Virginia G. “Jerry”, and  Jean and one son James H. “Jim” Chafin. For 42 years, she owned and operated the Chafin Grocery Store and ran a farm in Adair County. She was a devoted wife, mother, friend and neighbor. She had a warm smile and was always working to improve the lives of her children and her community. She stressed the importance of an education and offered to assist her children to aspire to their highest ideals.  She later married Hubert Bottoms who preceded her in death in 2000. In 1998, she moved to Muskogee, OK. She enjoyed keeping up with her children and grandchildren until her health began to fail. She moved into Pleasant Valley nursing home in Muskogee, where mother referred to many of the staff as her” angels” that gave her loving care, lots of kisses and “I Love You”. Also to the love and attention of the staff of Hope Hospice, especially Chaplin Wendall Cox, who would talk with mother about her wonderful journey to Heaven and sing her favorite “old time gospel songs and have prayer with her. On December 12, 2010, Dorothy rededicated her life to Christ and was baptized by her friend and pastor, Brother Monte Baggot. The Lord called Dorothy to her heavenly home on Thursday, May 9th, 2013 in Muskogee, OK with her loved ones by her side. She was 97 years old. She will be greatly missed by her many family and loved ones whose life she has touched.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her first and second husbands, her loving daughter, Virginia G. “Jerry” Chafin, two sisters, Vinita Covington of OKC and Pauline Harbolt of Albuquerque, NM, and one brother, Wendall Covington of OKC.

Those left to cherish her memory include son Jim Chafin and wife Linda of Albuquerque, MN, daughter Jean Goad and husband Bill of Muskogee, OK,  and one sister Wanda Jay and husband Dewey of OKC. Her legacy lives on in her six grandchildren, Lynette Chafin of Norman, Curtis Leos and wife Sandy of Tulsa, OK, Kent Chafin of Ada, OK, Melissa Jan Proffit and husband Ed of Del Rio. TX, Tammy Goad of Tulsa, OK  Danna Forman of Tulsa, OK, and Jennifer Chafin of Bartlesville, OK. She leaves 5 great grandchildren, Randall Martin and wife Lena of Corpus Christie, TX, Cory Chafin of Norman, OK, Dillon Chafin of Norman, OK , Katlynn Proffit and William Proffit of Del Rio, TX, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
