Sammy Alfred Dever

1944 – 2013

Sammy Alfred Dever, age 68, of Muskogee, OK, entered eternal life at Jack C. Montgomery V.A. Medical Center in Muskogee on May 14, 2013 after a lengthy illness.

Sammy was born June 13, 1944 in Muskogee, OK. He is the second born child of Sam and Irene (Graves) Dever and the third child born of his mother.  Sammy had three sisters and six brothers.  He attended Edison Elementary, West Junior High and Central High School in Muskogee. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1961 and was a truck driver for 40 years.

In 1966 he met Patsy Ann Salyer and they married on Feb. 5, 1971 in Wagoner, OK.  They were married for 13 years.  To this union two children were born, Jennifer Irene on Jan. 25, 1980 and Kevin William on July 16, 1981.

On Thanksgiving 2004 Sammy met for the first time a biological daughter he never knew existed, Lisa and her son, Taylor.  From that day forward and by the grace of God, Sammy’s life was changed for the better.

Sammy is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Irene (Graves) Dever; his older brothers, Donald Wayne Smith and Jerry Dean Dever; sister-in-law, Florence Lorene Dever; nephew, Jerry Wayne Salyer and Jerry’s father, Darrell Wayne Salyer, who himself went to be with the Lord on May 1, 2013 just 14 days before Sammy.  Darrell was Sammy’s brother-in-law and Best Friend.

Left to cherish Sammy’s memory are his children, Lisa (Lumpkins) Stinson and husband, Gordon, of The Woodlands, TX, Jennifer (Dever) Rider and her fiancé, Brecken Hutchens of Braggs, OK, Kevin Dever of Fort Gibson, OK; grandchildren, Taylor Stinson of The Woodlands, TX, Braiden Dreadfulwater of Muskogee; siblings along with nieces and nephews, Jimmy Dever of Coweta, OK, and his children, Dwayne Dever, Julie Hamblin, and Terri Crites, Shirley Lusty and husband, Bobby, of Vilonia, AR, Sharon Salyer of Fort Gibson and her daughter, Shelly Perry, Glen Dever of Haskell, OK, and his children, Tina Taylor and Troy Dever, Carol Farmer and husband Gary, of Muskogee, OK, and their children, Darin Farmer and Karri Murphy, Darrell Dever of Muskogee, Steven Dever of Jay, OK, and his daughter, Kimberly Dever; aunt, Opal Hill of Turlock, CA; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 17, 2013 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Reverend Jada McWilliams, Master Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy retired, officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Millsap Funeral Service of Fort Gibson.
