Joe Mayer

1932-2012

Joe Mayer of Muskogee, passed from this life, December 23, 2012 at the age of 80 years. He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, July 9, 1932, the son of John B. Mayer and Margaret Ellen (Johnston) Mayer. Joe spent his school years at Sacred Heart Catholic School and St. Joseph Catholic Preparatory School for boys in Muskogee. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 and saw duty in the Korean War. For a short time after his discharge, Joe worked at Hat Box Air Field in Muskogee, OK, but spent the  greater part of his working career in Civil Service as a Crash Fire Fighter, later becoming a supervisor in that field. During his career he was employed by the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Norman, OK; Tinker AFB in Midwest City, OK; USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, CO; Altus AFB in Altus, OK; Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX and served as Fire Chief for Fredrick Air Field in Fredrick, OK. He married Bobbie Jean Claunch on December 23, 1957 in Midwest City, OK.  Joe and his wife Bobbie relocated to Muskogee in 1972. He was employed by Muskogee Farmer’s Coop and Egan Mfg. Co. for a number of years before becoming a school bus driver for the Muskogee Public School system. He retired in 2002.

 Joe was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Bobbie who passed away in 2010. Left to mourn his passing is his brother Michael and sister-in-law Ellen Mayer of Muskogee; nephew, Michael Vincent and wife Sharla Jean Mayer of Oklahoma City; niece Shawn Margarette Mayer of Oklahoma City and a great niece Amanda Calista Mayer of Oklahoma City. Before experiencing ill health he enjoyed OU football, basketball, treasure hunting and being close to nature on the farm where he grew up.

 A graveside service will be held at Fort Gibson National Cemetery at 12:00pm on Friday, December 28, 2012.
