Alvin “Ray” Tatum, 60 year old Checotah resident, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at his home in Checotah. He was born to Luther and Loretta (Peeper) Tatum on Thursday, October 30, 1952 in Boley, Oklahoma.
He grew up in Seminole and Bowlegs, Oklahoma where he received his education. On Friday, April 8, 1983, Ray married the love of his life Ruth Roach in the Methodist Church of Hugo, Oklahoma. Ray became a truck driver, working for multiple companies throughout his career and retiring in 2004. In 2006, he moved from Okemah to Checotah. Ray had a love for life and enjoyed many hobbies such as restoring old cars, gardening, fishing, carpentry, he was a very skilled woodworker and was a member of the Checotah Church of God.
He is preceded in death by his dad, Luther Tatum; his mother, Loretta Morris and her husband Bill; brothers, Bobby and Jimmy Tatum. Ray is lovingly survived by his wife Ruth of the home; daughter Michelle Smith of Seminole; son Tony Roach and his wife Fran of Sand Springs; grandchildren Destry and Ansley Jackson of Seminole, Haley Wiggins and her husband Charles of Tulsa, Jacob Roach of Sand Springs, Sean McGrath and his wife Angie of Ohio and Alexander McGrath of Texas; great grandchildren Michael, Madison and Mallory all of Ohio. He is also survived by his brother Joe Peeper and his wife Colleen of Seminole; his sister Pauline Kidwell of Okemah; two sisters-in-law Edna Tatum of Arkansas and Mildred Tatum of California as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and a host of friends. Funeral services for Ray will be held at 2 PM on Friday, January 11, 2013 at Checotah Church of God with Reverend Tim Whisenhunt and Pastor Matt Vonwald officiating. Committal prayers and Interment will follow in Oktaha Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Jacob Roach, Calvin Latta, Perry Breshears, John Reeve, Ronnie Reeve and Jason Baldwin are serving as Casket Bearers. Paul Peeper, Claude Whisenhunt, Lonnie Robison, Bob Montgomery, Allen Spencer, Darren Glover, Jarrett Johnson, Lee Jones, Myrl Underhill, F.D. Sexton and Chris Robison are serving as Honorary Casket Bearers.
