Darin “Shawn” Branscum

1968 - 2013

— Darin “Shawn” Branscum, 44 year old Checotah resident, died at his home in Checotah, Oklahoma on Monday, January 28, 2013. 

He was born to Utah Carl and Grace Dora (Barber) Branscum on Thursday, March 21, 1968 on Okarche, Oklahoma. Shawn grew up in Okemah until the age of 10, moved to Marietta for 3 years, then later moved to Moore. He went to work in the family produce business, where he worked until his untimely death. On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, Shawn married his best friend Shannon Elizabeth Coy in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Shawn’s greatest loves were his wife, his mother, his motorcycle, playing the guitar, his dogs Zeus and Charlie which were like his children; niece Squishy Potomas (Samantha); Brent, Rowdy and his best friend/brother “Ink”.

 Shawn was a big hearted, loving and caring person. He was a selfless man who did everything he could for anyone in need. He did not like fishing unless it was deep sea, but would go with his wife to be with her doing what she loved. He even took his nephews Brent and Rowdy so they could have “Guy Time”. He enjoyed flying with his late friend Doug Hyer and cheering for his Oklahoma Sooners. Shawn was a big momma’s boy. He loved, admired, respected her and wanted to stay close just to be able to check in with her.  Shawn never met a stranger; he was a hard worker and he was loved by all.  He is preceded in death by his father Utah in March of 1978; grandparents; sister, Rena Fore; brother-in-law, Charlie Coy; uncle, Robert Barber and Aunt Jennifer Whitley.

 Shawn is lovingly survived by his wife Shannon of the home; daughters, Deana and Lindsey Branscum; his mom, Grace and step-father, Walter Grove; brothers, Bobby Rowan, Mark Branscum and his wife, Hillary, Curtis Grove and his wife Lori, Brian and Barrett Branscum; sisters, Terry Grove Huffman, Sherry Grove Allen and sister-in-law, Tabitha Gilbert; mother-in-law, Juanita Tatum; cousins, Brock Barber and Seama La France; brother and best friend, Wayne “Ink” Sanders.  He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews, Rowdy Cook and his wife Courtney, Samantha Cutbirth, Brent Cutbirth, Sara Whitewater and Colten Whitewater; many more extended family members as well as a community full of lifelong friends.

 Shawn’s family will be hosting a memorial service in his honor at 11 AM on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Brush Hill Baptist Church with Ron Forrest officiating.  You may share online condolences with Shawn’s family The family of Darin “Shawn” Branscum entrusted his care and cremation to John & Kim Garrett of Garrett Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service 311 SW 2nd Checotah, OK 74426 (918) 473-2244.
