John Wesley Guthrie

1935 - 2013

— John Wesley Guthrie, 77, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013 in Tulsa with his family at his side. He was born December 28, 1935 in Muskogee to Virgil Frank Guthrie and Bertha Perry Guthrie.  John grew up in the Wainwright area where he attended school graduating in 1955.

He met and later married Wanda Lee Foster in June 22, 1957 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. John and Wanda made their home in Muskogee and later were owners of a lumber and construction company, and an overhead door business.

John and Wanda attended and were members of the Muskogee First Assembly of God Church. They were actively involved in the missions ministry by serving on over 40 mission trips where they were building churches.  

John was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Bertha; his daughter, Cheryl Jean Woodall; his brothers, Virgil Jr., Carrol, and Leo; his brother-in-laws, Edward Hatcher and Lloyd Morgan.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda, of the home; his sons, Garry and wife Susan of McCurtain, OK, Terry and wife Marlena of Jacksonville, FL; his grandchildren, Kendra Yandell, Rachel Woodall, Clayton Guthrie, Chase Woodall, Tony Woodall, Tyler Guthrie, and Torrey Guthrie; his great grandchildren, Jakob Yandell and Jazzarae’ Woodall Stout; his sisters, Lena Mae Hatcher of Wainwright, Freeda Morgan of Muskogee; his brothers, Clarence Guthrie and wife Helen of Muskogee, Floyd Guthrie and wife Sue of Wainwright, Cleo Guthrie and wife Eunice of Muskogee, Cecil Guthrie and wife Pat of Wainwright; his sisters-in-law, Maxine Guthrie and Joan Guthrie, both of Wainwright, and Edith Guthrie of Stigler; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

The family requests memorials may be made to the Muskogee First Assembly Mission’s Fund, 3100 Gulick, Muskogee, Oklahoma 74403.

Funeral services celebrating the life of John will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Muskogee First Assembly of God Church with Dr. Steve Rose officiating.  Interment will follow at Greenhill Cemetery with Donnie Madewell, Richard Eller, Brian Crosby, John Richards, Mike Plunkett, and Ken Arney serving as pallbearers.  Members of “The McDonald’s Morning Prayer Group” will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Funeral services are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home and Crematory, 1830 N. York Street, Muskogee, Oklahoma.  Condolences may be sent to the family at
