Albert Ray Matthews, age 82, from Muskogee, passed away November 30, 2013. Al was born December 15, 1930 in Brush Hill, OK to Will and Rosie Matthews. He attended school in Onapa, OK. Al joined the United States Air Force on January 10, 1951 to serve his country. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1957. In 1960, Al graduated with a law degree from the University of Oklahoma. Al began his law practice in Muskogee in 1960 and his career expanded over 50 years. Practicing law remained his first passion throughout his life because he loved helping people. Al was a member of the Bedouin Shrine and also served as Potentate in 1971. He also served on the Muskogee School Board, Muskogee Fair Board, and Muskogee Roundup Club. His second passion was rodeo. He was a Senior Pro Rodeo Association World Champion Calf Roper and inducted into the Senior Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2002. The Senior Pro Rodeo Association had to keep adding age brackets because he wouldn't quit roping. In the 70 and over bracket, Al won the Break Away Roping in Hamilton, Montana with a 2.7 at the age of 80. Above all of his passions, spending time with his family was first and foremost. Al is preceded in death by his parents, William & Rosie Matthews; wife Jane Matthews; sisters Geraldine Thomas and Gladys Hawkins; son Dan Matthews; and grandson Jake Matthews. Al leaves behind to cherish his memories, wife Cheryl Matthews; children, Cindy Duvall & husband Aaron, Scott Matthews & wife Leigh Ann, Tammy Pierce & husband David, Tim Matthews & wife Cindy, Todd Matthews & wife Tammy, Brad Matthews & wife Alissa, Brian Matthews & wife Shannon; grandchildren Tate Cole, Tyler Ladd, Cara Craig, Haley Pierce, Lindsey Ison, Ben Matthews, Lacey Matthews, Hattie Matthews, Katie Matthews, Noah Matthews, Alex Matthews, Nick Matthews; step children, Blaz Durfey & wife Amanda, Beau Durfey & wife Amy, Dallas Hendrickson & wife Della, Kendra Beller; 9 step grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 1 step great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Visitation will be 12-9pm at Clifford D. Garrett Family Funeral Home, 1224 East Poplar, Ft. Gibson, OK. Funeral Services will be 1:00 pm Wednesday December 4, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, 600 East Okmulgee, Muskogee, OK under the direction of Hibbs Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
