Betty Ruth Townsend, 84 year old Checotah resident passed from this life Thursday, November 28, 2013 at her home surrounded by family. She was born Tuesday, November 12, 1929 to William “Bill” and Margie [Frazier] Lucas in Checotah. She lived in and around Checotah all of her life. While a Senior in High School she met Yahola Townsend, the love of her life and the two were married on Saturday, August 21, 1948 in Muskogee, a union of 54 happy years together. Betty then went to work for Cimarron Federal Savings and Loan (originally Victor F.S. & L.) eventually becoming the Branch Manager of the Eufaula branch and Assistant Vice President before her retirement in 1993. At home, she and Yahola were ranchers, raising cattle and Appaloosa horses. In their spare time the couple enjoyed square dancing, traveling, garage sales, and antiquing. Betty will be fondly remembered as a doting mother and grandmother who always spoiled her family (but not too much).
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband Yahola Lee Townsend, and sister-in-laws Wanema Priddy, Lahoma Campbell and husband Meryl, and Lou Barnett and husband Beryl.
Betty is lovingly survived by her four children: Vicki McIntosh and husband Dr. Stanley of Eufaula, Terry Townsend and wife Lisa of Checotah, Becki Jacobs and husband Greg of Pierce, and Kelly Townsend and wife Georganna of Checotah; Grandchildren: Olivia McIntosh, Leah Jack and husband Robby, Cynthia Billy and husband Nathan, Paul McIntosh and wife Hallie, Michael, Lance and Zachary Townsend, Sarah Arden, Matthew McCutchen, Kristen Campbell and husband Rodney, Ashley Jameson and husband Nolan, and Shelby, Cheyenne, Courtney, Callie and Bailey Townsend; Great Grandchildren: Jeffrey, Scarlet and Juliet McIntosh, Solomon, Victoria, Thatcher and Gates Jack, Nacona Tahdooahnippah, Helena, Joseph, and Sophia Billy, Riley Townsend, Jaden Townsend, Andrew and Kaya Arden, Nicholas, Christian, and Jasmine McCutchen, Madilyn McCutchen, Reese Campbell and Alexis Jameson; and sister-in-law Helena Patman and husband Bill of Mandeville, LA.
