John Lyal Mikelson, 83, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at his home in Muskogee. He was born on June 6, 1930 in Fort Worth, Texas to Lyal Otis and Verdia Ann (Woolsey) Mikelson. While growing up, due to his father employment, John resided in several areas. After high school, he attended Oklahoma A&M pursuing a degree in Engineering before returning home to join the military. Shortly after, he began his career with the Oklahoma State Highway Department where he worked for more than 30 years before retiring. John did volunteer work with the police department and served as a negotiator and for the last ten years operated his orchard.
Lt. Col. John L. Mikelson served for over 34 years in the Civil Air Patrol, Oklahoma wing and was a Muskogee County sheriff deputy. He was a member of the Oklahoma Fruit Growers Association and in 1996 received a Merit Award for outstanding service in promotion of fruit culture.
John is survived by his sister, Mrs. Janie Ferguson of Oklahoma City; five nieces and two nephews, Mrs. Ginny Price, Mr. Dan Harder, Mr. Bill Harder, and Ms. Mary Ellen Harder all of Rockport, Texas and Mrs. Marie Frazoso and Mrs. Andre Bradley both of Oklahoma City.
Memorial services will be 11:00 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Fosters’ Ivory Chapel with Father Michael Knipe officiating.
