Raymond Carey, 87 year old lifetime Checotah resident, passed away peacefully, at his home on Wednesday, January 2, 2013. He was born on Tuesday, February 17, 1925 in Checotah to Etheridge and Lela (Vandiver) Carey. He attended Checotah Public Schools graduating from Checotah High School. Raymond attended Oklahoma State University before joining the army. He later returned to school and obtained his Bachelors Degree Vocational Agriculture.
Raymond married the love of his life, Miss Ollie Bittle in 1951. Raymond took his first job in Kansas before moving back to Checotah where he taught until his retirement in 1972. He enjoyed his retirement by spending his time as a builder, working cattle and enjoying his love of horses. Raymond was a member of the First Baptist Church of Checotah where he was ordained a Deacon and served as one of the Trustees.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Ollie and sister-in-law Betty. Raymond is lovingly survived by his sons John Christopher “Chris” Carey and his wife Marsha of Golden, Colorado and Mitchell Porter “Mitch” Carey and his wife Laney of Edmond; grandchildren Greg Carey, Evan Carey and his wife Danielle, Heather Lovett and her husband James, Erica Smith and her husband Brady. He is also survived by his brother Johnny Vann Carey of Riverton, Kansas; other extended family, a host of Checotah Public School District alumni and numerous friends and family of the community.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials to be made to the Checotah FFA at 320 W. Jefferson Checotah, OK. 74426 Attn: Jason McPeak.
Viewing for Raymond will be held 1 pm - 5 pm on Sunday, January 6, 2013 with his family greeting friends from 2 pm - 4 pm at Garrett Family Funeral Home. Funeral services honoring the life of Raymond Carey will be held at 2 pm on Monday, January 7, 2013 at the First Baptist Church with Reverend Wayne Brown officiating. Committal Prayers, Military Honors and Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Greg Stidham, Lester Colburn, Buddy Martin, Randy Dixon, Dr. Leo Wynn, Jerry Smith, Doyle Mitchell, David Miner, Wesley Thompson, Randy Knight, Tommy Combs, Rick Emerson, Jimmy Williams, Robert Vinson, Dr. Gary Harding, Larry Bookout, Roy Lee Hogan, David Prince, Dee Sisson, Donald Ray, Ronnie Brinsfield, Bob Hogan, Randy Christian, John Garrett, Leon Dixon, Arvil Jackson, Sam Goad, Joe Grose, The Frames, Don Johnson, Matt Vandiver, Eddy Winkle, Greg Martin, 12 Buckmasters , Curt Working and all 400 students that he taught will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers.
