Joan Thomas Newport

1930 - 2013

— Joan Thomas Newport, 82, died Friday February 15, 2013 at Eastgate Village Retirement Center. Joan was born on October 11, 1930 in Muskogee, OK to Collie E. “C.E.” and Hazel (Stockdale) Thomas. She grew up in Muskogee and graduated from Central High School.

While in Muskogee she helped in the family businesses. She also was a proud Girl Scout leader for 7 years. Joan moved to Odessa, TX where she worked for North American Van Lines for 17 years. She was a member of T.O.P.S. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and attended many of their conventions. Joan moved back to Muskogee and was a charter member of the Kiwanis Kickers Group that performed for many of the nursing homes in Muskogee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ralph and Herman Thomas, grandson Keith Miller and great granddaughter Anna Miller.

Joan is survived by her sister Colline and her husband J.R. Trent of Muskogee; brother Clyde Thomas of Muskogee; her daughter Peggy Pettinger and her husband Richard of Muskogee; son Ron Miller and his wife Jamie of Muskogee; son Wayne Miller of Muskogee and son Lynn Owens and his wife Trisha Owens of Coleman, TX; grandchildren Shawna Raun and husband Bill, Jennifer Hinote and husband Michael, Leslie Buchman, Michael Miller and his wife Letha, Chris Miller and his wife Cally, Kevin Terril, Mitch Todd and wife Colette and Dusty Todd and wife Courtney; twenty-one great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday February 19, 2013 at Bradley’s Belltower Chapel with Reverend Conrad Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Miller, Michael Hinote, Bill Raun, Tommy Trent, Jimmy Prestridge and Johnny Sculli.
