M. Joann Crotty

1931-2013

— Mrs. Joann Crotty, 82, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013. The youngest of four, she was born Mary Joann Armstrong, February 28, 1931 in Muskogee, OK. She was the daughter of Francis Martin and Rosalie Elizabeth (Diwine) Armstrong. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Muskogee and then West Junior High School. She graduated from Muskogee Central High School Class of 1948 and continued to be active with her class reunions.

She worked for many years at the Oklahoma Printing Company. During this time, she was active in the Crusaders (a Catholic singles organization) where she met her future husband, Dr. Duane Crotty. They married on April 11, 1959 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Muskogee, OK. Soon thereafter, she began her family and became a stay-at-home mom.

She is survived by: husband Duane of 54 years; their children - Stephen and wife Beverly of Austin, TX; Jim and wife Jennifer of Muskogee; Brian and wife Randi of Tulsa; Karen Witherell and husband Carlyle of Muskogee; and their grandchildren: Stefanie Crotty, Erin and Brendan Crotty, Kyle Crotty, Claire, Hattie, Abigail, and Marcella Witherell; sister-in-Iaws Mary Crotty of Tulsa and Jeannine Crotty of Auburn, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

Joann dedicated her life to serving others through Meals on Wheels, as a Girl Scout Leader and in many other ways. Joann was a long time member of the St. Joseph's Altar Society. She served as President and in other various positions including being chairman of the Annual Quiche and Salad Luncheon. She also spearheaded the Annual Cookie/Candy Sale. She was also a long time member of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and received the Woman of Distinction award in March of this year.

Throughout her life, she shared her beautiful voice at her Catholic Church and  other occasions. When the parish began a Bell Choir she quickly joined and actively played for over 20 years. Joann loved the city of Muskogee and for many years was an active member of the More Beautiful Muskogee organization and contributed to many city-wide improvements over the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Jay and George Armstrong and sister Rose Flusche.

The Rosary will be recited on Monday July 15, 2013 at 7:00 PM in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday July 16, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Michael Knipe officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Crotty, Dr. James Crotty, Dr. Brian Crotty, Kyle Crotty and Carlyle Witherell.
