Virgil Ray Pitts

1955 - 2012

The funeral service Virgil Pitts, 56, of Fort Gibson, will be at 2:00 on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at Green Country Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Ron Hood. Pallbearers will be Billy Johnson, Bobby Johnson, Robert Egnor, Quinton Webb, Carl Hearod, and Russell Webb. Honorary pallbearers are Chris Keys and Larry Staller. Interment will follow in the Tahlequah City Cemetery under the care of Green Country Funeral Home.

Virgil was born on September 27, 1955, in Tahlequah, OK, to Bobby Pitts and Niece (Adcock) Garmon. He died at his home in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma on February 2, 2012.

Virgil married Joni Birdtail on February 28, 1977. They lived a long and happy life together. Being married for 34 years, they were like biscuits and gravy. Virgil enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with his loved ones. He had achieved many accomplishments in his life including being a Lieutenant at Jess Dunn Correctional Facility, escorting President Bill Clinton during the Oklahoma City Bombing, and also being commander of the CERT team.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Dwight Arnold Pitts, and his grandparents, Harvey Pitts and Ina (Walker) Pitts. He is also preceded in death by one of his best friends, Robert Joseph Walker.

He is survived by his wife, Joni of Fort Gibson; mother Niece Garmon; father and his wife, Bob and Juanita; his three daughters, Rebecca Pitts of Tahlequah, Mandy Keys and her husband Chris of Tahlequah, and Clorissa Pitts of Fort Gibson; six grandchildren; four sisters Valeda Stover, Benita Pitts, Eileen Pitts, and Vera Barber and her husband James. He also has many "brothers" that will miss him, and a host of relatives, friends, and loved ones.
