Donald Dwayne Cordell Sr.

1940-2013

Don was born October 1, 1940 to Ira and Pearl Cordell. He attended Fort Gibson and Salinas, California schools, as well as Oklahoma State University Fire Fighter Extension Program. Don served as a Sergeant in the Oklahoma National Guard for eight years. He went to work at the Muskogee Fire Department in December 1962 and retired as Assistant Fire Chief in 1994. One of his proudest accomplishments was serving the city of Muskogee and it’s community for 32 years. He married Vera White Cordell July, 16, 1960 and they were together for 53 years and had three children.

Don was a Christian and member of First United Methodist Church in Muskogee. Don had a tough childhood, but rose above his life circumstances through his Christian faith, strong work ethic, support from family and friends, and his mentor and brother-in-law, George White, of Fort Gibson. He was a devoted father, grandpa, and papa to his grandchildren. He had a love for the outdoors; his hobbies were hunting, riding horses, reading history, telling his grandchildren stories about his childhood - and anyone else that would listen. His best characteristic was his charitable nature to people in need, and he received a tremendous amount of joy serving in mission trips to Israel and Brazil.

Funeral services for Don will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 22, 2013 at Millsap Funeral Service Chapel in Fort Gibson with Kendal Smith officiating. Burial will immediately follow at South Bethel Cemetery in Braggs, Oklahoma.

Survivors include his wife, Vera, of the home; his children, Dwayne and wife, Shannon of Murphy, Texas, Kevin and wife, Laure of Flower Mound, Texas; seven grandchildren, Claire, Madeline, Dane, Spencer, Paige, Chloe, and Katie; sisters, Billie White of Fort Gibson, Guinn Rhoden of Broken Arrow, Kathryn and husband, Bob Cookson, of Fort Gibson, Sonja Pennington of Muskogee; brother, Tony Cordell and wife Judy, of Tulsa; brother-in-law, Herman “Red” White, of Braggs; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sheila Marie Cordell; parents, Ira and Pearl Cordell; brothers, Carl and Jackie Cordell; In-laws, R. E. and Syble White.

In memory, the family suggests donations to the South Bethel Cemetery in Braggs, Oklahoma or to your  favorite charity.
