Donald Lee Manley

1927 - 2013

— Donald Lee Manley passed away on May 12, 2013 at the age of 85 after a long-fought battle with cancer.

He was born on July 5, 1927 in Havelock, Nebraska to Archie and Lillian Manley where he grew up on a farm with two brothers and one sister. Later the family moved to Oklahoma. At the age of 17, Don lied about his age to join the military and serve in WWII. Four days before his 18th birthday he found himself on a ship with 2,200 other soldiers and on their way to Japan. There he served as a lab and surgical assistant at the 28th General Hospital in Osaka, Japan. He was one of the first on the ground in Hiroshima after the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. This was thought to have contributed to his battle with cancer later in life.

Donald L. Manley made the most out of his 9th grade education by becoming a successful cattleman and working as a manager for the Tulsa World newspaper for 42 years until he retired at the age of 72. Don continued to raise cattle and live on the Sue-Lee Ranch in Fort Gibson, OK until his death. The ranch was dedicated to his late wife, Gloria “Sue” Manley and their son Raymond “Lee” Manley, both of whom died tragically in a car accident.

Don was preceded in death by his wife Gloria Sue Manley and their son Raymond Lee Manley, as-well-as his older brother William (Bill) Manley and granddaughter Elizabeth Manley. He leaves behind his two sons Jimmy Manley and Brian Manley, brother David Manley, sister Norma Vallon, and four grandchildren (Claira, Daytona, Amber, and Gloria). Sierra Sanders and Bethany Sanders were also like granddaughters to Don later in his life.

The family would like to give special thanks to Jeneatta Manley and Valerie Vickrey for their love, friendship, and support to Don throughout the years of his life.

Services for Donald Manley will be held Wednesday, May 15th, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Millsap Funeral Home in Ft. Gibson, OK
