Theodes Shumate

Theodes Shumate was born in Tullahassee, Oklahoma on March 3rd, 1943 to Johnnie and Beulah Shumate. He attended and graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School, Tullahassee, Oklahoma in 1961. After graduation he joined a local labor union in Tulsa, OK. He then met and married the love of his life, Miss Juanita Osborn, and to this couple, one son, Darren, was born. The union was later dissolved. Theodes was drafted into the United States Army, serving twenty-two months during the Vietnam conflict. He received an honorable discharge. Professing his love for the Lord, he united with Rose Of Sharon. Theodes dearly loved his family and was known as the elder of the family. On Saturday mornings the family had a family prayer call line and he would be the first to lead the family in prayer. He had a special passion for giving, especially to children, and he never met a stranger. Theodes was faithful to his pastor and the Rose Of Sharon Church family, willing to do whatever he could for God’s kingdom. Theodes left us on Wednesday, September 25, 2013. Those meeting him at heaven’s gate are his parents, Johnnie and Beulah Shumate. Six siblings, George, Ruby, Thelma, Johnnie Jr., Shirley and Delois.

The family he leaves behind to celebrate his life include his children, Darren Shumate, Wilmer, TX, Brian (Misuzu) Chism, Moore, OK, Nicole (Leonard) Smith, Wagoner, OK, Eshonda Chism, Tulsa, OK, and Christopher Jefferson, Muskogee, OK. Three brothers, Donald Ray Shumate, Muskogee, OK, Rev. Morvin (Sybil) Shumate, Desota, TX and Marvin Shumate, Muskogee, OK. Fourteen grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The homegoing service for Theodes will be held on Friday, October 4th, 2013, 9:00 AM at Old Agency Baptist Church with Rev. A. H and Marlene Jones as host pastors. Rev. Chester Thomas, pastor of Rose Of Sharon, will deliver the eulogy. He will be laid to rest in Ft. Gibson National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation hours are today from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Services are under the direction of Ragsdale Funeral Center.
