Johnnie Lee Morrison

1931 – 2013

Johnnie Lee Morrison was born on August 19, 1931, in Boley, Oklahoma to Benjamin and Critan Morrison (Simmons). He was the youngest of twelve children.

Johnnie was a 1950 graduate of the Historical Manual Training High School. From there he went on to join the United States Air Force where he served eight years of active and reserved duty. During his tenure he earned the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals.

He married the love of his life Elmyra McNamee on December 31, 1958. From this union they had two daughters. Throughout his life, Johnnie was a very hard worker, continually providing for his family. Johnnie spent the bulk of his career with the Muskogee Public School System and Oklahoma Natural Gas Company, from which he retired. Johnnie always loved people and in remaining active and staying connected to the community; he expanded his lawn service and shoe shine business. In addition, he became more closely involved with the Paul Young Football League.

Johnnie Morrison has been an upstanding member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church since the early 1940’s. During that time, he’s served in the offices of Superintendent of Sunday School, President of the Deacon Board and President of the Brotherhood, in addition to other positions.

Proceeding Johnnie in death is his mother and father, as well as 8 sisters and 3 brothers.

Johnnie leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Elmyra Morrison. Two daughters, Antoinette Shade of Muskogee, OK and Arlene Young of Palatine, IL. Four grandchildren: James (Angie) Shade, Maria Shade of Dallas, TX, Natasha Shade and Taylor Young of Palatine , IL. Eight great-grandchildren; Airam Michaeleigh Ragsdale who was his pride and joy. Tyrese Harris, Montell Jordan, ShyNiera Nunez, Christian Nunez, Sasha Alvarez, Kevin Chase and Joseph Nunez.

He leaves behind a special nephew, Jerry (Tracy) Morrison, Rialto, CA and a host of other nieces and nephews. In addition, he leaves his brother’s and sister’s-in-law, Velma Zachary, David McNamee, Clyde McNamee, Fred (Shelly) McNamee, and Blanch McNamee, who he considered his own.

Johnnie Morrison’s family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude to Robert Perkins who was a lifelong friend and brother. We also thank Volna Bowens, Jackson James, Brother Jack Manley, his close friends.

The homegoing celebration for Johnnie will be held on Friday, December 6th, 2013, 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Mitchum, officiating. Rev. David L. Ragsdale, Jr. will perform the eulogy. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Ft. Gibson National Cemetery. Visitation hours are today from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Services are under the direction of Ragsdale Funeral Center.
