On May 23rd, 1939 a baby boy was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Lamar and Mattie (Bright) Desmuke. He was given the name Muriel.
He accepted Christ at a young age in Muskogee at New Zion Baptist Church. He received his formal education in Muskogee attending Dunbar Elementary, Manual Training Junior High and Manual Training High School proudly graduating in the class of 1958. He graduated from Northeastern State University in 1969 with a Bachelors of Science Degree. In 1959, Muriel enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in San Antonio, TX, Altus, OK and Spain throughout his military career. Upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1963, he returned in Muskgoee where he was united in matrimony to Peggie Ann Treadway. Also during this time he worked for Corning Glass Company and Taft State Mental Hospital. He later became employed with the United States Postal Service in Tulsa, later transferring to the Muskogee branch. In 1966 he began employment with the Veterans Administration Regional Office as a Supervisor of the Adjudication Division. He retired from the Veterans Administration in 1996. Muriel was a member of the Langston Alumni Organization, NAACP as well as other organizations.
Her was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one grandson, Cannon Edwards.
On Thursday, November 22nd, 2012 Muriel Desmuke was called from labor to eternal rest.
Those he leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his great legacy are his beloved wife, Peggie, four daughters, Kim (Rickey) Canady, San Antonio, TX, Vanessa Desmuke (Wayne) McClure, Muskogee, OK, Carla Desmuke (James) Edwards, Houston, TX and Gayle Desmuke (Kevin), San Antonio, TX, one brother, Austin (Geneva) Brown, Bethany, OK, five sisters, Joyce Hornbeak, San Antonio, TX, Marlene (Clarence) Rhymes, Columbus, GA, Verna (Jessie) Palmer and Ruby (Carl) Caldwell, all of Muskogee, OK and Teresa Ross, Bellflower, CA, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Services for Muriel will be held on Saturday December 1st, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at Timothy Baptist Church with Rev. Kelly Payne, Host Pastor, Rev. Gary Mitchum, Sr. Pastor of New Zion Baptist Church will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be in Booker T. Washington Cemetery. Visitation hours are today from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Ragsdale Chapel. Services are under the direction of Ragsdale Funeral Center.
