Tahlequah to celebrate 100 years of Oklahoma homes

TAHLEQUAH — The American Association of University Women’s 26th annual Homes for the Holidays Tour will celebrate the Oklahoma Centennial with this year’s tour by showcasing homes built between 1907 through 2007.

A nice addition to this year’s tour will be a home for all to enjoy. Located in the woods just off U.S. 62 in the Woodall community is a cozy bed and breakfast retreat. The Scrappin’ Pad is a home that was recently converted to bed and breakfast designed specifically for scrapbookers and crafters of all kinds.

“I think the home was built in the early 1980s, but was completely remodeled and updated by previous owners who sold me the house,” said Christi Bowlin. “After remodeling and selling to me, the previous owners, Erb and Edna Kimble, built a big beautiful house right behind me.”

The Kimble’s home also will be featured on this year’s tour.

The warm, country cottage retreat offers luxurious accommodations for up to 12 overnight guests.

“Each guest gets their own bed with plush linens and each of the bedrooms has its own unique décor,” Bowlin said.

There are three bedrooms including Grammy’s Garden, which sleeps two; Mikhael’s Memories, which sleeps four; and Addie’s Slumber Party, which sleeps six. Along with the three bedrooms there are two full bathrooms and a large craft room with a variety of equipment, comfortable seating and ample workspace for any of the guests’ scrapbooking needs.

“I have a friend in Texas who opened one like this and the business is booming, so I just went for it,” Bowlin said.

Since its opening in May, the Scrappin’ Pad has been a popular weekend getaway for many guests. Crafters of all kinds have traveled from all over Oklahoma, as well other parts of the United States including Washington, North Carolina, California, Michigan, Texas and Kansas to indulge in a weekend of relaxation and pampering.

Beyond scrapbooking, guests also can indulge in catered meals, crafting classes and spa services. According to the scrappinpad.com, manicures, pedicures and chair massages are available upon request prior to the guests’ retreat. For those new to the Tahlequah area is a relaxing patio surrounded by an abundance of full-grown trees that provide a great escape to take in some fresh, country air.

In preparation for the holiday season, The Scrappin’ Pad is holding holiday crafting classes November through January. According to scrappinpad.com, some of the classes include an Acrylic Holiday Mini-Book class, which is the new craze in scrapbooking, and in December The Scrappin’ Pad will be turned into The Wrappin’ Pad. The class will provide instruction on how to decorate and personalize gift bags and labels as Christmas draws near.

“One of my faithful scrapbooking friends, Kim Copeland, co-owner of The Mustard Seed Gift Shop, recommended me (for the tour), and I was thrilled,” Bowlin said. “I’m very proud of my establishment and want to share it with everyone. Kim and her sister-in-law, Tricia, are even loaning me some items from their store to help with the decorations.”

The Scrappin’ Pad is sure to add variety to this year’s Homes for the Holidays tour.

“It’s a great place to hold family gatherings, showers, meetings, or just a relaxing place where friends can spend a creative weekend working on projects and enjoying each other’s company.”
