Change takes commitment

Congratulations to John Tyler Hammons, Muskogee’s new mayor. Tuesday’s vote reflects a feeling in town that citizens want a change — a change in leadership, vision and attitude.
A change in vision and attitude certainly takes a change in leadership. And we look to Hammons, as well as the two councilors elected Tuesday — Jackie Luckey and Shawn Raper — to provide the kind of leadership that inspires change.
But for a town to change it takes more than only changes at the top. It takes a community committed to improvements in the quality of life and a willingness to support those improvements with word and work.
We all need to be committed.
The best quality that outgoing Mayor Wren Stratton exhibited was the ability to motivate others around her. In her one term, two years, she conveyed a positive outlook for Muskogee without downplaying any of the problems or most difficult challenges we face.
That’s an attitude our new mayor, council and community should continue to cultivate.
