Can’t ignore Main Street

When Main Street floods, it’s a good thing that the water doesn’t run several feet deep as it does on other streets in town.

If it did, Muskogee firefighters would be busy pulling people out of stalled and waterlogged cars on Main.

The street from Shawnee Bypass to downtown, a section of U.S. 64, is one of Muskogee’s busiest streets. It’s also one of Muskogee’s showcase thoroughfares, one that the city has invested a lot of money and time in to beautify.

But what’s the value of beautification if the roadway is rough and deteriorating, which it is? And while we can expect high water where creeks pass under roadways, such as along South Gulick, should a major thoroughfare have several inches of water standing on it after a moderate rain?

In a recent Phoenix story, the state Department of Transportation said it wanted to repair the roadway, but it didn’t have the money to do it. And even if the state had the money, improving drainage wasn’t considered in the department’s plans.

The city passed off the lack of proper drainage as a development problem, which is certainly partly true.

However, it would seem part of the city’s responsibility is managing development so that flooding on city streets is limited.

Of course, when a deluge comes, water is going to run down and stand in streets. But Main’s water and surface problems are a growing problem, that need a fix.

Sadly, the fix is not being addressed.
