Published July 22, 2008 05:04 pm - Andrew Rice, a state senator, should easily win the Democratic primary Tuesday.

Try not to look past Tuesday

Phoenix Staff Writer

Just as there is only one credible candidate on the Republican side of the U.S. Senate race in Oklahoma, there is only one credible Democratic candidate.

Andrew Rice, a state senator, should easily win the Democratic primary Tuesday over perennial candidate and loser Jim Rogers — and with reason.

Rogers files for office, but doesn’t run a campaign.

Rice, on the other hand, has a great deal of support from his party. While donations to his campaign don’t equal Sen. Jim Inhofe’s campaign funding, which is close to $2 million as of last month, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, Rice has received about $650,000, enough to run a strong campaign.

Rice also is young, yet he has a global perspective on life and politics. He has a master’s degree from the Harvard Divinity School and worked with non-profits in the Far East.

Rice will almost certainly face the incumbent, Inhofe, in November in the general election, which will be an interesting race for Oklahoma. But don’t look to November yet. Vote in this coming Tuesday’s primary.
