Published July 22, 2008 05:18 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Bill provided towns option to keep tax State Rep. George Faught’s June 16 guest column explained why he voted against Rep. Richard Morrissette’s amendment to House Bill 3103, an amendment to remove the state sales tax on groceries.
In his explanation Faught said removal of that state sales tax “could also cripple smaller cities and towns where local grocery sales tax often provides a majority of the town’s operating revenue.” That statement makes me wonder if Faught even read the sales-tax amendment. Had he read that measure, he would have discovered in the second paragraph the statement that removal of the state sales tax on groceries “shall not apply to any county or municipal sales tax imposed pursuant to law.” The second paragraph went on to say that the county or municipal sales tax on groceries could be removed only by “a resolution by the board of county commissioners or the approval of an ordinance by the municipality in accordance with law.” In other words, removal of state sales tax had no impact on the local grocery tax unless local officials voted to remove it. Therefore, Faught’s statement, in my opinion, was made either because he didn’t read the amendment or he was trying to fool the voters.
