Published October 07, 2008 03:51 pm - Reducing the chance of a nuclear war will not be reduced by the talk or production of more weapons. World nuclear security Iran and North Korea certainly deserve all the criticism they get for their unwillingness to stop development of nuclear weaponry.
But Mohamed ElBaradei, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, is correct that nuclear -weapon states share in some of the blame. China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States have signed the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty but are far from eliminating or reducing their nuclear arsenals and, in some cases — Russia and America — continue to expand or talk about expanding development of nuclear weapons. Yet these states condemn others for wanting to develop the same weapons. We do not advocate complete elimination of nuclear weapons. Mutual Assured Destruction has deterred their use in the past, and turning back the clock on nuclear weapons is impossible. But reducing the chance of a nuclear war will not be reduced by the talk or production of more weapons, but in greater security of a few.
