THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Don’t waste tax money on online teaching

— Dingbat No. 1 and dingbat No. 2 don’t get it. Gov. Mary Fallin and State School Superintendent Janet Baressi think there is no limit to the wondrous things you can do online spending millions on two online charter schools and three more are waiting school approval. But, there is a limit.

You can’t re-create Paul Harvey’s magic box online. Harvey’s magic box was Tulsa Central High School. It was there he met his English teacher, Isabel Ronan, who introduced him to words and he fell in love with them. She taught him to stand up straight and push with his diaphragm. She put him in plays and took him to KVOO Radio and told the program manager, “this young man has the talent and ability to be on your radio station.”

There were a lot of WKRPs after that. Paul Harvey learned to paint pictures on the mirror of our minds so well, he became the most listened to voice in the history of radio.

Only a live teacher can approach every kid in his or her classroom like an individual puzzle and seeing a student’s individual strengths, help the student realize their talent.

So, our tax money should not be wasted on online teaching in charter schools which can pick and choose their students. Put that money into real, live public schools who teach all kids and give the teachers in those schools a raise they deserve.
