We are all in this together

One of the most contentious presidential election cycles is finally coming to a close — one that seems to have begun shortly after Barack Obama took the oath of office.

One way or the other, half of the citizens of the United States will wake up losers on Wednesday — their candidate, their party or their beliefs falling short in the ballot box.

It is said that to the victor goes the spoils.

We would amend that — to the victor goes responsibility.

Because while we wake up Wednesday as male or female, conservative or liberal, minority or majority, we will all wake up Americans.

Every citizen of the United States deserves to be heard — not just the winners.

Every elected official must govern for us all — not just his or her party or his or her beliefs.

Very few elected officials will receive a clear mandate today.

The margin of victory is more likely to be in single digits than by 20, 30 or 40 percent.

According to a USA Today poll, the presidential election is statistically tied in swing states.

Analysts say the election might see Mitt Romney win the popular vote and Obama win the Electoral College vote.

Turnout in swing states could decide this presidential election.

That tells you the razor-thin mandate our next president will receive from voters.

Elected officials must remember we are U.S. citizens first and every political affiliation second.

And govern like it.
