Celebrate higher education

— Muskogee is lucky to have many higher education facilities located here.

Muskogee has Bacone College, a Connors State College campus and the Indian Capital Technology Center.

It also has a campus of Northeastern State University.

The Muskogee campus just turned 20 years old.

Former Muskogee Mayor Kathy Hewitt said NSU Muskogee was a result of wanting to give residents the chance to get a complete education.

“The education consortium at the time had a vision,” Hewitt said.

That vision was to enable Muskogee residents to get an education from pre-elementary through college without having to leave town, she said.

Over the past 20 years, the NSU Muskogee campus  has helped thousands of students reach that goal.

The Muskogee campus opened April 27, 1993.

NSU Muskogee Campus Dean Tim McElroy estimated between 15,000 to 20,000 students have been served at the campus since it opened. He said the campus averages 650 to 700 NSU students per year.

 That’s a pretty strong legacy for a 20-year-old.

Muskogee should be proud for all our higher education opportunities.

They make Muskogee a better place.
