Cherokees’ generosity helps pupils

— Money distributed by the Cherokee Nation to area school districts will fund anything from a new band to paying teachers’ salaries.

That’s one of the most significant parts of the Cherokees annual Public Schools Appreciation Day.

The tribe has allocated 38 percent of its revenues from the sale of tribal car tags to schools and educational programs since 2002.

The Cherokee Nation distributed a total of $3.2 million to 92 school districts in northeastern Oklahoma this year.

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker said this year’s allocation was “a record contribution to area schools.”

While some school districts may not have received as much funding as last year, each district can use the financial boost the tribe offers.

And while the Cherokees distribute funds based on Cherokee enrollment at each school, the money goes to help all children.
