The greatest crisis facing America today is the obscene level of wealth and income inequality we see today. While the rich get richer, the middle class continues to disappear. We have more people living in poverty than ever before. In recent years, 95 percent of all new income is going to the top 1 percent.
The average CEO’s salary reached a new record high of $9.7 million in 2012. Today there are countless signs that our culture is sick with greed. The love of possessions is a sickness with the greedy, and if it isn’t cured soon, it will prove fatal for America. This report states that CEO’s now make 273 times what the average worker makes. America is rotting from within while the rich smile and gloat.
Meanwhile the rich and the large corporations continue to pay their lowest percentage in taxes since 1915. In 1950, anyone making over $400,000 paid taxes in the rate of 91 percent after deductions. The Republicans have lowered taxes on the rich ever since.
According to one report that I read, of the 100 largest corporations, 82 use offshore tax havens, holding nearly $1.2 trillion in those offshore accounts.
Many of the rich individuals do the same thing to avoid paying taxes. This means that the working American is paying for the operation of the government. It’s not fair.
We cannot allow Republicans to make working people pay the bill, while they shield the rich and wealthy from paying taxes.
Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, said: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” The current Republicans have changed for the worse, and if it continues, will ruin us.
