Get out on trails today, tomorrow

Get up out of your chair and head to Muskogee’s trails today and tomorrow. Bring your friends and your family

These are the final two days of six days of fitness activities on the trails, called “Walk, Run, Ride the Trails.”

The events offer a great opportunity to check out some of the many trails that have been growing around the city.

“Walk, Run, Ride the Trails” is part of the Muskogee Wellness Initiative’s  Eat Better, Move More and Be Tobacco Free initiative.

“You just need to come out,” said Jason Shelor of Muskogee Wellness. “We’re also giving T-shirts to those who participate. It’s spring time, it’s so nice, and we want people to come out and enjoy this weather.”

Many involved in the events are members of teams participating in the Be Well Okie Challenge fitness program, sponsored by the Muskogee Wellness organization. But you don’t need to be involved in the challenge to participate.

Our community has increased its focus on health and wellness over the last few years.

We have built trails, created bike lanes and expanded efforts to encourage citizens to move more.

But all of those efforts are meaningless if the people of Muskogee don’t get out and get on the trails.

“The older I get, I try to maintain my weight and watch what I eat,” said Muskogee Mayor Bob Coburn, who led one of the walks this week. “This is a good way for me to get exercise. It’s good for me and good for my family.”

It is good for you too. Get up and get out there. You’ll feel better and be healthier for it.
