There are many facets in our society, not the least of which is the crucible of human nature. Many good things come from it. At the same time there are events and occurrences that defy reason, namely why a person or persons would burn one of a small community’s established churches. That happened on Aug. 17 in Okay. The United Methodist Church was the target of vandals who had previously carried out unspeakable acts, not once, but twice.
History is replete with attacks on religious institutions in many forms, going back as far as the Crusades, and even earlier. Wars have been fought in the name of religion.
Our response is not to hate or retaliate, but to pray for those individuals who have revealed their insecurities and lack of understanding that freedom allows the practice of religion. Amen.
