Pet owners can help no-kill goal

Volunteers would love nothing more than to make the Muskogee Animal Shelter a no-kill facility.

“Our goal is to have a no-kill shelter, and we’re not anywhere close to it,” City Clerk Pam Bates said. “We’re too small. We don’t have the room.”

Shelter worker Kelly Williams said the shelter has 12 cat cages and 21 indoor dog kennels, which often have more than one dog each.

That places a priority on two things — adoption and getting pets spayed and neutered.

The volunteers are doing their best to get the animals at the shelter adopted.

They have adoption events every Saturday at Petco, 936 W. Shawnee Bypass.

They try to make it as easy as possible for adoption by making the fee as low as $25.

The adoption events raise money to help pay to spay and neuter the animals before adoption.

The adoption fees also help pay for some medical expenses for the animals.

But there is only so much that the volunteers can do.

Animals are being brought in faster than they can be adopted out.

That leads to tragedy.

The volunteers’ jobs could be made so much easier if owners would spay and neuter their pets.

The volunteers’ goal of a no-kill shelter is a kind and compassionate one.

Pet owners can help make the goal possible.
