Character awards make for good future

Our future is bright if the students at a couple of local schools are any indication.

Hilldale Middle School and Sadler Arts Academy were each named an Oklahoma State School of Character by the Character Education Partnership.

Hilldale was the first middle school to be named a School of Character in Oklahoma. And Sadler was the first K-through-eighth school to be named a School of Character in Oklahoma.

Criteria for selection are based on the 11 Principles of Character Education, which include such things as providing students with opportunities for moral action, fostering shared leadership, and engaging families and communities as partners in the character-building effort.

Students learn much more than the basic subjects in school.

And we should especially be proud of the students.

Students there are willing to accept and learn the life lessons that character education teaches them.

Teaching character in our schools will benefit us all — in lower crime rates, better paying jobs, attracting more families to town and keeping some of our children from leaving for good after high school.

Every person involved in earning this distinction deserves to take a bow.
