Muskogee needs about 85 people to fill vacancies on about 40 city authorities, boards and commissions.
Review the list online and if you can contribute, volunteer.
It doesn’t pay anything – in terms of income.
But being involved is worthwhile.
“It’s a great experience,” said Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Shawn Raper, who was appointed by former Mayor Hershel McBride to his first board assignment. “You learn firsthand about the challenges the city faces, and you get the chance to make improvements.”
Knowledge about the board or commission’s area is useful, but not essential.
“Preferably, people who want to fill these positions would have some degree of knowledge, but we can consider anybody who is interested,” said Mayor Bob Coburn.
And while the boards and commissions play vital roles in our city, some are more active than others.
With so many vacancies, the City Council should review the list of boards and commissions and eliminate any no longer essential to Muskogee.
