Character training vital in classroom

— Teaching character to students may be as important to their success as teaching them any individual subject.

It is, at the very least, a vital complement to the thinking skills taught in the classroom.

Intelligence without character can be a dangerous thing.

But knowledge — tempered by character — can move mountains.

We applaud Muskogee Public Schools for its strong character education program.

Students recently were acknowledged at the Muskogee Public Schools 2013 Character Recognition Banquet.

The banquet is an important venue to remind students — and parents — that character should be a companion on the educational journey.

The banquet acknowledged both the finalists and the winners in several categories, including a poster contest and a drug-free video contest.

The banquet also acknowledged two students from each of the 13 schools in the district who earned character awards.

The number of parents who attended the banquet in support of their children sends the message that character is important, too.

We applaud those family members and friends who were in attendance.

The character program has done wonderful things for the district, too.

Muskogee High School has been named a National School of Character. Rougher Alternative Academy was named a State School of Character recently.

The real success will be determined when students who were taught character in class rely on it in the real world.

These students and many, many more are well on their way to happy and productive lives because of MPS’ emphasis on character.
