Be watchful as burglaries spike

The mild winter and early spring might have made early 2012 more comfortable, but it also encouraged burglars to begin their summer activities early, too.

Muskogee police say the number of burglaries have increased this year because of warmer weather.

It makes sense.

Nobody wants to get out in blizzard conditions or when the temperature hovers so low that you can barely move.

As it gets warmer, citizens leave their homes for longer periods of time just to enjoy the time outdoors.

Police have a few tips to help keep you from becoming a statistic.

Muskogee Police Lt. Bobby Lee said burglaries usually spike after school lets out for the summer.

That’s a disturbing thought.

Muskogee youth have plenty of opportunities around town to keep themselves occupied instead of turning to crime simply because they are no longer required to be in a classroom most of the day.

Parents, guardians and mentors also need to work to find ways to keep youth invested in quality projects to keep them from turning to crime.

What to do

Police say burglaries spike when the weather warms up. But, there are things you can do to help prevent burglaries, or at least help yourself if you are burglarized.

• Write down serial numbers for your electronics and store the list in a safe place. Police can’t search for your valuables if they can’t verify the items belonged to you.

• Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle — even if it’s locked. Police Lt. Bob- by Lee said a locked win- dow isn’t enough to deter a thief.

• Keep a watchful eye on your neighborhood and call the police if you see something suspicious. Lee said it’s much easier to catch a burglar if they can be stopped in the act. So, call 911 if you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.
